How do you set up DMARC for Google Workspace?
Set up SPF and DKIM first and wait 48 hours. Then publish a DMARC record at _dmarc on your domain with the policy at none, read the reports for a week, and move to quarantine a small percentage at a time until it covers all failing mail.
SPF lists the servers allowed to send as your domain. DKIM signs each message, and in Google Workspace it stays off until someone generates the key in the Admin console and starts authentication. DMARC tells receiving servers what to do with mail that fails, and sends you reports. The hard part of Google Workspace email security is everything else that sends as your domain: the CRM, the marketing platform, the billing system. Each one has to pass before the policy is enforced, or your own mail lands in spam.

DMARC services
Policy design and rollout
Where the policy starts and how fast it tightens: none to monitor, then quarantine on a small share of failing mail, raised to all of it, and reject only once nothing legitimate fails.
DNS configuration
An SPF record with an include for every service that sends as your domain, a 2048-bit DKIM key where your DNS host supports it, and the DMARC record.
Reporting and monitoring
Aggregate reports sent to a mailbox or group set up for them, not a person's inbox, and read for senders that fail before the policy tightens.
Ongoing tuning and domain protection
New sending services brought into SPF and DKIM as your tools change, and Gmail's spoofing protections for mail pretending to come from your domain.

How Connections Health secured its email without an IT team
Connections Health, a therapy practice, already ran on Google Workspace and wanted to understand its security features and secure its email. Suitebriar ran a Google Workspace security audit over several meetings, recommended DMARC, and set up DKIM and DMARC at the highest level of security the practice's business allowed.
Read the story →“We appreciated the detailed technical explanations. We don't have an in-house IT professional so it was great that they took the time to explain the technical aspects of our security audit. The security audit involved several meetings over time and they were very patient with our schedules, last-minute changes, and cancellations. They were always willing to adapt and re-schedule to meet.”
How DMARC gets to enforcement
- 1Find every senderGoogle Workspace, plus every service that sends as your domain: CRM, marketing, billing, support desk. Each needs to pass SPF or DKIM.
- 2Set up SPF and DKIMOne SPF record with an include for each sender, and a DKIM key generated in the Admin console. Both can take up to 48 hours to start working.
- 3Monitor at p=noneMail is delivered as normal while the reports show which senders fail. Google suggests a week of daily review; failing senders get fixed now.
- 4Enforce in stepsQuarantine a small percentage of failing mail and raise it to all of it. Reject is the last step: rejected mail is never delivered.

Email security features in Google Workspace
Three protect your domain's mail as it goes out; two protect your people from what comes in.
| Protection | What it does | Where it's set |
|---|---|---|
| SPF | Lists the servers allowed to send mail as your domain | A TXT record at your domain host |
| DKIM | Signs each outgoing message so receivers can check it wasn't forged | Admin console, Gmail, Authenticate email, plus a TXT record |
| DMARC | Tells receivers what to do with mail that fails, and reports back | A TXT record at _dmarc on your domain |
| Spoofing and authentication | Flags inbound mail from lookalike domains, fake employee names, or pretending to be your domain | Admin console, Gmail, Safety |
| Attachments and links | Checks encrypted or scripted attachments, shortened links and links to untrusted domains | Admin console, Gmail, Safety |
Email security and DMARC FAQ
What IT leads ask before tightening their domain's email policy.
Sending from more than Gmail?
Tell us your domains and the services that send as them, and we'll talk through where your policy can start.
Will DMARC block our own email?
Not when it's rolled out in stages. At p=none delivery doesn't change; the reports show which of your senders fail, and those get fixed before any mail is quarantined. The risk is going straight to reject, because rejected mail is never delivered.
We already have SPF. Why add DKIM and DMARC?
SPF only lists your sending servers. DKIM adds a signature to each message, and DMARC passes when either one matches the From: address, so with both in place mail still passes if one check fails. DMARC is also the only one of the three that asks receivers to quarantine or reject mail spoofing your domain, and the only one that reports back.
Our CRM and marketing platform send as our domain. What happens to them?
Each needs an include in your SPF record or its own DKIM key on your domain, matched to the From: address. Google's guidance allows up to 10 include: tags in one SPF record, so services that support DKIM signing are the easier route when the list is long.
Do Gmail's sender rules apply to us?
If you send more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail accounts, yes: since February 2024 that needs SPF, DKIM and a DMARC record (a policy of none is enough), plus one-click unsubscribe on marketing mail. Every sender needs at least SPF or DKIM.
What does Gmail already do about phishing?
It warns about and filters untrustworthy mail by default. The Safety settings in the Admin console add checks for lookalike domains, fake employee names, unauthenticated mail and risky attachments, but their default action is a warning in the inbox. The decision worth making is whether those messages go to spam or to admin quarantine instead.
How long does it take to reach enforcement?
Google's rollout sets the minimum: 48 hours after SPF and DKIM, a week at p=none, then quarantine raised in steps.
