What does a Looker consultant do?

A Looker consultant builds the LookML model that sits between your database and your dashboards: each metric and each join written once, so every team's numbers match.

LookML describes the dimensions, calculations and relationships in your data. Looker's SQL generator turns the model into SQL that runs in your database, and the model's files are version-controlled in Git. Dashboards, Explores and training build on that model.

Looker services

Data modeling and semantic layer design

LookML models of your tables, joins and calculations, with each metric defined once.

Dashboard and visualization creation

Dashboards and Explores built on the model, so every chart uses the same definitions.

ETL and ingestion optimization

The pipelines that load your warehouse, so data arrives in the shape the model expects.

BigQuery integration

Looker generates SQL from the model and runs it in BigQuery, where your data already is.

Training for analysts and business users

Analysts learn to extend the model; business users learn to explore it and build their own reports.

Looker (Google Cloud core)

Which Looker edition?

Google hosts Looker (Google Cloud core), managed from the Google Cloud console. Choose the edition before the instance is created: it can't be changed afterwards.

EditionStandardFor small teams, with up to 50 internal platform users and simplified BigQuery connectivity.
EditionEnterpriseUnlimited users, with VPC Service Controls and private connections.
EditionEmbedEverything in Enterprise, plus signed embedding and custom themes.
Not Google Cloud coreLooker (original)Keeps username and password and LDAP sign-in, which Google Cloud core doesn't offer.

Looker FAQ

What data and IT leads ask a Looker consultant before an implementation.

Planning a Looker implementation?

Tell us what data you have, where it lives and who needs it, and we'll talk through where a model would start.

What's the difference between Looker and Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio)?

Looker is Google's enterprise BI platform: governed data from a central semantic model written in LookML. Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio, renamed in April 2026) is Google's no-cost tool for personal analysis and ad-hoc reports, with Data Studio Pro for teams. Data Studio can also read Looker models through its Looker connector.

Will our existing Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) reports keep working?

Yes. Google moved existing reports, data sources, assets and users to Data Studio with no action needed.

Which Looker edition do we need?

Standard covers up to 50 internal users. Enterprise has unlimited users and private connections, and Embed adds signed embedding. The edition can't be changed after the instance is created, so it's decided first.

Do we need BigQuery to use Looker?

No. Looker runs its SQL against the database it connects to. On Google Cloud, BigQuery is the natural pairing: queries run in BigQuery, the Standard edition includes simplified BigQuery connectivity, and data lineage in Knowledge Catalog works only with BigQuery sources.

How do we make sure every team's numbers match?

Define each metric once in LookML. Every dashboard and Explore uses that definition, so a change made in one place reaches every report, and the model's history is kept in Git.
